Yoga Therapy

Under the knowing hands of a specially trained professional, yoga can serve as a key therapeutic treatment for many health concerns. In fact, a growing number of healthcare practitioners recognize yoga’s healing potential and recommend its gentle powers of rehabilitation, recovery and relaxation. Yoga Therapy is a therapeutic system and can be a complementray system suitable for addressing a wide range of conditions including hormonal imbalances, arthritis, back pain, stress and anxiety, and scoliosis to name just a few examples.

This highly specialized set of therapeutic practices, each targeting specific disorders, has been developed over the course of 70 years by B.K.S. Iyengar.  Drawing on her +30 years of yoga experience combined with having trained and assisted directly with B.K.S. Iyengar in his medical classes in India over many years, most recently in June 2013, Temmi Ungerman Sears, director of YogaBuds is a supportive and knowlegable guide and empowers you in your own healing process.

In addition to being a certified Iyengar yoga teacher, with her many years of teaching and healing experience facilitating both group yoga classes and private yoga therapy sessions, Temmi was recently awarded the Yoga Therapist Certification, I-YCT from the International Yoga Therapy Association, an association that bridges yoga and healthcare. Applicants from 37 different countries applied. The association developed a grandparenting process for certified Iyengar yoga teachers, thus recognizing and valuing the profound difference of our in-depth international rigorous training and high professional standards. Founded in 1989, IAYT has consistently championed yoga as a healing art and science and serves as a professional organization for yoga therapists worldwide supporting research and education in yoga. As of 2017, IAYT had over 4,000 individual members from over 50 countries. IYTA provides an organized professional voice for yoga therapy in public policy forums for integrative, complementary, and alternative health care.

"Health is a state of complete harmony of the body, mind and spirit. When one is free from physical disablities and mental distractions, the gates of the soul open." - B.K.S. Iyengar

Yoga Therapy targets root causes, not symptoms

Yoga Therapy has the potential to have far-reaching implications in healthcare in the 21st century and is fast growing. The emergence of the discipline of yoga therapy to address clinical conditions is not only timely but urgent. Yoga therapy is the individual application of yoga for therapeutic purposes for a broad range of acute or chronic health conditions in individuals or small groups. The yoga therapist conducts a detailed in-depth evaluation and designs a tailored yoga practice for the individual’s unique constellation of conditions, issues and imbalances.

YogaBuds uses modified poses — often supported with props — which are appropriate for individual needs and capabilities and safely enable students to access their body with greater awareness and to thereby experience healing. Students also receive individual home practices, which they’re encouraged to follow between sessions.
