Private Yoga

 

Individualized yoga sessions are aimed at providing a warm, supportive environment that promotes health and well-being and ensures that your yoga practice is truly healing and nurturing.

Private yoga sessions, including Yoga Therapy, are customized to the unique needs of the student and involve a one-on-one consultation and ongoing sessions. These sessions are for the discerning student who wants to deepen their understanding of yogic practices and philosophies, inspire growth, and lead to transformation. They are also recommended if you are recovering from surgery, coping with injuries or various health issues. Transform your life with personalized yoga practices.

A private yoga session is very interactive. The innovations with props in Iyengar Yoga has made yoga a very powerful tool providing both preventative and curative results to many medical problems. A student with a physical, physiological, psychological, or emotional condition may not be able to perform classical yoga postures. Yoga Therapy uses classical poses but in a modified manner. Sri B.K.S. Iyengar pioneered the use of props such as ropes, belts, blankets, chairs, blocks, bolsters, benches, sandbags, etc. which function as supports in order to enable a beginner or someone limited by fatigue, pain or other conditions to experience the postures more completely. The student is then able to achieve and enjoy the benefits of many postures requiring less muscular effort.

Private Yoga Sessions

Individualized private sessions are independent of group classes and can be taken as a preparation for the beginner student, to supplement group classes, or on their own. Sessions can be structured in various ways.

Individualized private session are customized to your specific needs and can be tailored to focus on:

  • The design of a personalized sequence of postures that emphasize a specific need or a specific category of poses (restorative, forward bends, backbends, standing poses, twists, inversions, hip-openers, etc.).
  • The development of a personalized home yoga practice, including homework assignments.
  • A question and answer period to gain deeper understanding of specific poses and how the maximum benefit of each pose can be achieved.
  • Discussions pertaining to lifestyle, including dietary and work habits and stress management techniques.

Private Lessons are 60 or 90 minutes and are held at the YogaBuds™ Iyengar Yoga Studio where the environment is inviting and calming, and fully equipped with all yoga props necessary for private work. Rates are $100 + HST for one hour.

Yoga Therapy for Adults

Yoga can serve as a therapeutic treatment in many situations. Yoga therapy does not merely treat the symptoms but focuses on the root cause of various conditions and is increasing in popularity as other health-care practitioners (including doctors, chiropractors, physical therapists, etc.) recognize the healing powers of yoga.

The benefits of Yoga Therapy are well-documented, and are highlighted in many news sources, including the New York Times and Johns Hopkins.

In a session/program for Yoga Therapy for Adults, personal attention and individualized sequences of postures are created and provided to address and assist the healing of specific issues, physical limitations, conditions and injury recovery. A range of issues including but not limited to: general upper and lower back pain, sciatica pain; carpal tunnel; sacroiliac joint pain, arthritis of the knee and shoulder, slopped discs, scoliosis, women’s health issues, asthma, stress, headache/migraine, anxiety, depression, insomnia, immunodeficiency, high-blood pressure, etc.

At the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute in Pune, India, daily two hour Medical Classes run fun five days a week providing specific programs of Iyengar Yoga associated to various conditions. YogaBuds™ director, Temmi Ungerman Sears, has been greatly influenced by both observations of and participation (Assisting) in these Medical Classes.

Yoga Therapy for Children

Utilizing a child’s innate curiosity and desire to move, yoga provides many benefits for any child at any developmental stage (see YogaBuds™ for Kids program). However, when confronted with a physical, physiological, psychological or emotion condition, limitation or issue, yoga offers a time-tested and non-threatening alternative treatment modality for children.

Drawing on her experience working with children of all ages and abilities as an Art Therapist in a Special Needs school in Boston in the 80’s; as a Family Therapist in Toronto, in her YogaBuds™ Kids and Family yoga classes and workshops and in her private therapeutic work with children, Temmi Ungerman Sears has successfully woven the therapeutic application of yoga into her work.
